What are these instructions for?
These instructions
tell you how to apply for a Swedish Institute scholarship if you intend
to study at a master's level programme in Sweden. These instructions
are valid for the Guest Scholarship Programme, the Swedish-Turkish Programme, and the Visby Programme.
Am I eligible?
Because the Guest Scholarship Programme
is open to applicants from all over the world (except students from the
Nordic countries - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway),
nearly everyone is eligible. However,
you are not eligible for these scholarships if any of the following are true:
- You are not eligible if you will have lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship period is due to begin.
- You are not eligible if you have a Swedish permanent residence permit.
- You are not eligible if you have a Swedish work permit and you are not an EU citizen.
There is no age limit for scholarship holders. You do, however, need
to be fluent in English. You may apply even if you are already studying
in Sweden, provided you meet the above criteria. You cannot apply
retroactively for academic programmes you have already been accepted
into or are currently studying at.
How do I apply?
When
you apply for admission to a master's programme at a Swedish university
or university college, you can at the same time apply for a scholarship
from the Swedish Institute.
There is no separate application form for the SI master's scholarship. Do not send SI any master's scholarship requests or applications.
You need to tell the school you are applying to directly that you would
like to be considered for an SI scholarship. Some institutions let you
indicate this on their admission application forms. In other cases, you
will need to attach a letter to your admission application that spells
out your request for an SI scholarship explicitly. Send your completed
application for admission, including the request for an SI scholarship,
to the institution you would like to study at. They will process your
scholarship request.
The application deadline for the scholarship is the same as the application deadline for the master's programme you have chosen.
How is my scholarship application processed?
The
school you have applied to first chooses whom to admit to their
master's programmes. From this group of successful applicants, it then
considers those who have requested an SI scholarship, and makes a
shortlist of up to 10 recommended scholarship candidates per programme,
which it sends to SI.
As a rough estimate, SI receives around 10 recommendations for each
of the around 200 master's programmes currently offered by Swedish
institutions of higher education.
The Swedish Institute collects these recommendations from all
Swedish universities and university colleges, and then makes the final
selection of scholarship recipients.
If you have been selected for a scholarship for a program that
begins in the fall semester, you will be informed by SI in May or early
June. Because of the nature of the selection process, you cannot expect
to be informed by SI if you are not selected.
Note: You cannot apply for an SI scholarship once
the application deadline has passed, nor can you apply for a
scholarship for a programme you are already studying at.
Which master's level programmes does the Swedish Institute scholarship cover?
SI
master's scholarships are intended for master's level programmes at
Swedish universities and university colleges. These programmes are
compiled in a database and in a catalogue.
Schools provide details about entrance requirements, content and
application procedures for each master's programme. Schools also decide
whether they want to take part in the SI scholarship programme. (A
few do not.) The Guest Scholarship Programme is open to studies within
all subjects and for all nationalities, whereas other scholarship
programmes restrict eligible nationalities, allowable master's
programmes, or both.
Study period
The
length of master's programmes is typically two or three terms - 40-60
credits (60-90 ECTS). The scholarships are usually granted for one
academic year (i.e. two terms) at a time, but are extended if the study
results are satisfying.
Scholarship benefits
At
present, the scholarship amounts to SEK 8,000 per month for nine months
(one academic year). This sum of money is designed to cover the living
expenses of one person only. The scholarship holder is insured by the
Swedish Institute against illness and accident during the scholarship
period.
Distribution of scholarships
SI administers scholarships for several different programmes, reflecting the priorities and mandates of various funding sources:
- Master's scholarships via the Guest Scholarship Programme
Scholarships
within this programme are distributed in international competition
among candidates from all over the world. (Students from the Nordic
countries - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway - are not
eligible.) Scholarships are granted within all subjects.
Recipients from developing countries may also apply for a partial travel grant.
- Master's scholarships via the Swedish-Turkish Programme
This
is a programme for citizens of Turkey, where priority is given to
applicants within the field of European studies or human rights law.
The programme is financed by the Consulate General of Sweden in
Istanbul and administered by SI.
Recipients also receive a travel grant.
- Master's scholarships via the Visby ProgrammeThe
Visby programme is open to students from Belarus, Ukraine and the
following parts of Russia: the cities of St Petersburg and Moscow and
the provinces of Kaliningrad, Pskov, Novgorod, Leningrad, Moscow,
Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and the Republics of Karelia and Komi.
Recipients also receive a travel grant.
